A Guide to Job Searching
While it is difficult to search for a good job, ultimately it all depends on your approach.
Applying for a job is selling yourself to a potential employer. You should be able to answer a potential employer when they ask you why they should choose you for the job. You should be able to put yourself above the rest.
Make sure you create a great CV and cover letter. This is very important since it is the one that introduces you to your potential employer, and your aim is to impress them. If it fails, don’t let it bring you down too much. Take the rejection and move on.
Below are some useful approaches to job hunting.
Join Linkedin. Being part of LinkedIn will be an asset to you. Join discussion groups for the industries you are interested in and start building your social network to keep updated for the latest job offers. You can also get noticed by following great companies that you like and commenting on their posts. Ensure that the comments that your posts are just professional ones.
There are companies that hire people upon the recommendation of their trusted employees. Perhaps you have a family member or a friend who works in a company that you want to work in; you can ask this friend or family if there are job openings in their company. You may be able to find out about vacancies which can put you at an advantage over your competitors if someone can recommend you.
Look for jobs outside of job listing. Look for companies to work for and not vacancies. Your interest in the company will show in what you say when you apply for a job there. Job listings are still helpful though. You can send a CV and cover letter to a company that has openings even if the role is not suitable for you. Take your chance, they may still have jobs that are for people with your skills. Your great CV and cover letter will show them what you’ve got.
You can also look for unfamiliar jobs that are available but you need to research on this and perhaps you will be interested to try them out. This less traditional career path will have less competition but it will give you more opportunities to expand your horizons.
How you handle the application process will give potential employers an idea of what kind of worker you are. It is good to know more about the company through research before applying for a job. If you understand the company and what they do, it could work to your advantage.
